Dear Friends,
There are three High Holy Seasons at Royal Oak First: Christmas, Easter, & Fish Dinners!
The 3rd season is upon us. On March 1, 15, 29, and April 12, we will host over 1,200 of our neighbors for a night of good food and good fellowship. Let’s be honest, while we will raise some money for missions and choir camp, Fish Dinners are not primarily a fundraiser. What they are is a gift to the community of welcome and hospitality. It is a chance for people to relax and enjoy the company of others. That is a real gift in the world today.
Last year was my first experience, and on the first night there was one man who was the first to arrive. I don’t remember his name, but I do remember him telling me that coming to our fish dinners was something he and his wife had done for many years. He then went on to tell me that his wife had died in the last year but he knew that coming to the fish dinner that night would bring comfort to his grieving heart. It was right then that I realized the power and importance of this ministry. It’s not for the money we raise, or the food we serve, but for the friendship and sense of belonging we offer.
So, here’s what I need you to do:
- Pick a date and pick a friend or two and come and enjoy the dinner.
- Pick a date that you would be willing to come and make the dinner a success. There is a job for everyone including working the kitchen, wiping down tables, shaking hands at the door, or selling tickets.
Please join the Royal Oak First Cod Squad (“Cheesy” is my middle name…) and let’s make sure our community knows that they are welcome here in our home.
Grace and peace,
