Friends,
Yes, I know, last week’s message was pretty heavy. Justice and Mercy are important. We do need to open our eyes and really look at what is happening in the world around us. But, we also need to remember that “this is the day the Lord has made.” We need to take time to “rejoice and be glad in it.”
For the next three weeks, we are going to celebrate Love – Modern love. If you are on Facebook, you probably saw my post. I asked you all to share “what fills your heart with love.” Oh my goodness, the pictures that you all posted were so precious (look for them on the big screen). There were pictures of couples, children, grandchildren, dogs, and cats. It is fun to call attention to and celebrate the joys of life, the things that fill our hearts with love.
Many of you took the Modern Love survey and we will be talking about those results as well this weekend. It’s clear that the traditional images of love, relationships and marriage are shifting. In the words of Bob Dylan, “the times, they are a changin’.” The truth is, the times are always “a changing.” If we look back through the Bible, we see some pretty radical changes in the views of marriage, love and relationship. We’ve come a long way from Solomon and his 700 wives. Still, through all of the changes from Biblical times to today, we find one amazing constant: Love. It is the title of the sermon for this weekend. It is the promise of God: “His Banner Over Me Is Love.”
Celebrate with us on this pre-Valentine weekend. As I type this letter, I hear the echo from the Beatles’ tune playing over and over again. “All you need is love; all you need is love. All you need is love; love. Love is all you need.”
