It’s Mary Poppins Week! Yes, this week in our Faith and Film series we focus on Mary Poppins Returns. Monday night, 180 of us descended on the Emagine theater (we filled two theaters) to watch as the extraordinary Mary Poppins returned to the Banks family. What a great night! I was excited to see so many of our children braving a late school night to share in the fun. As we often do at the end of the movie, I asked some of the children to give me ideas for Sunday’s sermon. Many talked about that song in the film, “Where the lost things go.” It is a song reminding us that nothing is lost forever. Some liked the line “anything is possible, even the impossible.”
Sounds like a couple of Bible verses we know. “All things are possible for the one who has faith.” (Mark 9:23) “All things are possible for God.” (Matthew 19:26b.) One theme that came from both children and adults on Monday night focused on the lamplighters. These were the community of men who worked together to literally light up the streets at night, helping the Banks children and Mary Poppins find their way home in the fog.
Jesus tells us that we are the light of the world. “Let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.” How do we find that light, the light of the living God that shines in each one of us? How do we let that light shine for all the world to see?
Anything is possible, even the impossible.
